Practicing Self Care!

Self care can be incredibly difficult for people to carry out, especially those who struggle with their mental health. Doing something nice for yourself can sometimes seem ‘odd’ or ‘weird’ when in actual fact, it’s something that everybody can benefit from.

Self care basically means to do something to look after yourself. Something nice, to make you happy or something to make you smile!

There are countless ways to practice self care, from bigger things like showering, getting your hair done, nails done, to something ‘smaller’ listening to a song that makes you smile, eating a chocolate bar, texting a friend. Sometimes, these tasks can seem monumental and impossible. It can be easier to work your way up to the bigger things. Start off small.

‘Smaller’ tasks can include things such as;

~ cuddling a pet (or someone else’s)

~ listening to your favourite song

~ drinking a warm drink

~ calling a friend or family member

~ write in a journal/diary

~ getting some sleep

~ eating your favourite snack

~ stretching

~ drinking a glass of water

~ hugging a teddy

~ lighting a candle

~ changing into clean clothes or pyjamas or even just changing underwear

Bigger tasks can be things like;

~ having a shower or bath

~ washing your hair

~ washing your face

~ eating a meal/going out for dinner

~ practicing some yoga

~ studying

~ going for a walk

~ doing some craft

~ speaking to someone who can support you (therapist, GP, Nurse, family)

~ getting dressed up nice!

~ cleaning up your living space

~ doing some laundry

~ doing your makeup

~ buying yourself something nice

~ going on a shopping trip with friends or family

These can be such difficult tasks for people sometimes, especially with the current climate. This year has been crazy for all of us. It has effected each and everyone of us in different ways. But just a little note to end this on…

You deserve to treat yourself with kindness, whether it be your brain telling you dont deserve it, or because you’re busy working, looking after other people, you deserve to be kind to yourself. You deserve to be clean. You deserve that chocolate bar. You deserve that hot chocolate with the cream and marshmallows. But most of all, you deserve love. Self love! Look after yourself, especially during such a tough year.

All my love, Meg x
